HOW-TO

How to install the Meta Pixel on your site

The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code that tells Meta what people do on your website after they click an ad: which pages they visit, whether they fill out a form, whether they buy. Without it, your ads are flying blind. Meta now groups the pixel under something called a dataset in Events Manager. Your dataset ID and your pixel ID are the same number.

How to do it

01

Open Events Manager

Go to business.facebook.com, open All tools, and choose Events Manager. Check that the right business portfolio and ad account are selected in the top left, then click Connect data sources.

All tools Events Manager Connect data sources

02

Create the dataset

Choose Web and click Connect. Name it after your business, add your website address, and continue. Copy the Dataset ID that appears. That's your pixel ID and you'll want it handy.

03

Choose Meta Pixel only

When asked how you want to connect, pick Meta Pixel only for a standard install. If your platform supports it, Conversions API and Meta Pixel is the stronger option, and PRYNT can set that up for you.

04

Install the code

You'll get two choices. Use partner integration is the easy route for most site builders and store platforms: pick your platform and paste your pixel ID into its settings. Install code manually gives you a block of code to paste into your site's header, just above the closing head tag. Most site builders have a header code or custom code field that applies it to every page.

Tip. Pick one method, not both. Installing the pixel through a plugin and also pasting the code by hand double counts every visit.

05

Finish setup

Click Continue, leave Automatic advanced matching on if it's offered, and click Done. Standard events like Lead and Purchase can be added later with the Event Setup Tool or through your platform.

Careful. Do not delete a pixel or create a second one to start over. You'd lose your event history and any audiences built on it. If you already have one, open it in Events Manager and choose Continue pixel setup instead.

HOW TO KNOW IT WORKED

Install the Meta Pixel Helper extension in Chrome, load your website, and click the icon. It should show your pixel ID with a PageView event. You can also open your dataset in Events Manager, go to Test events, enter your URL, and watch PageView appear as you browse. Within a few hours the Overview tab shows the dataset as Active.
