HOW-TO

How to set up conversion tracking

Conversion tracking is how Google Ads knows an ad actually produced a lead, not just a click. Without it, you're paying for traffic and guessing at results, and Google can't optimize your campaigns toward the actions that matter. The easiest version tracks a thank you page: the page people land on right after they submit a form or book.

STEP BY STEP

How to do it

01

Open Goals

In Google Ads, click the Goals icon in the left menu, then Summary.

Goals Summary

02

Create a conversion action

Click Create conversion action and choose Conversions on a website. Older screens and guides call this New conversion action and Website. Same flow either way.

03

Scan your site

Enter your website address and click Scan. If Google finds your Google tag or a linked Google Analytics property, click Done. If not, click Set up and add the Google tag to your site, or ask us to.

Tip. Only track real business actions as Primary conversions: forms, calls, bookings, purchases. Set page views like visiting your pricing page as Secondary, or they'll pull your ad optimization in the wrong direction.

04

Define the conversion

Choose Automatically without code, pick a match type such as URL contains, and enter your thank you page address, for example yoursite.com/thank-you. Name it something clear like Contact form lead.

Automatically without code URL contains /thank-you

05

Save and set Primary or Secondary

Save. Mark it Primary if you want Google Ads to optimize toward it, Secondary if you only want to observe it.

Careful. Deleting or editing an existing conversion action resets its history, and changing what counts as Primary changes how Google spends your budget. Check with PRYNT before touching conversion actions on a live campaign

06

The Google Analytics route

If your site already sends events to Google Analytics, you can mark one as a key event instead. In Analytics go to Admin, Data display, Events, find the event such as form_submit, and turn on Mark as key event. Once Analytics and Google Ads are linked, that key event can be imported into Google Ads as a conversion.

HOW TO KNOW IT WORKED

Back in Goals > Summary, find your conversion and check the Status column. Submit a test form yourself. Within a few hours the status should move from Unverified or No recent conversions to Recording conversions.

A distinct thank you or confirmation page on your website. If you don't have one, PRYNT can add it.

Either the Google tag already on your site or the ability to add it. Again, we can handle this part.
